500 weeks ago, I sent the first Friday Forward to my team of about 40 people at Acceleration Partners. Here’s how it started:

As I dug through the archives to find that first edition, I was struck by how much my life has changed since I began this small ritual, and directly because of it. I also noticed how many life milestones appeared in these messages, including:

The Bat Mitzvah speech for my oldest daughter, who just started her senior year of college.

The release of my first book, Elevate, which opened up an entirely new path as an author.

Stepping down as CEO of the company I built to focus more on writing and speaking.

Saying goodbye to our family dog, Ollie, days before his 10th birthday.

Since the beginning of Friday Forward, a single question has come up again and again: why do I keep doing this?

It wasn’t just others asking this question. I asked this myself many times, especially in the early days. Friday Forward really competed with the time I spent building a business and family, and it wasn’t connected at all to our industry.

I almost stopped, more than once. But I started hearing replies that something I wrote made a real impact. That it helped someone think differently, take a risk, repair a relationship, or simply feel seen. Those replies gave the work meaning and gave me a reason to keep going.

Over time, writing Friday Forward made me a better thinker, a better listener, and a more grounded leader. But doing this also uncovered something deeper; a reason for writing that I didn’t fully recognize at first.

At some point, I started thinking about my kids. And, maybe one day, their kids. I imagined them reading these posts long after I’m gone and understanding something essential about who I was and what I believed. Not based on achievements or resumes, but on values and ideas. Things that otherwise might have been lost, or limited to vague memories or secondhand stories.

The concept of legacy today has become egotistical. Legacy isn’t something we control or curate. Legacy comes from living in a way that leaves an imprint on others and trusting them to decide what your life meant. It’s about them, not you.

And that’s what this body of work has become for me: a collection of thoughts, stories, and beliefs that I hope will outlive me. A way to pass on what matters.

Over time, that purpose became more important than financial goals or artificial summits of achievement where the view never really matched the anticipation. This work, though quieter, has always felt more meaningful and lasting.

The late Clayton Christensen once said:

“Don’t worry about the level of individual prominence you have achieved; worry about the individuals you have helped become better people.”

That quote stays with me. Because in the end, life’s not about what we achieve. It’s about the values we live by and the people we help, both while we’re here and after we’re gone. Christensen’s own words are proof of that.

And maybe, just maybe, that’s enough.

To those of you who have been reading for one week or all 500: thank you. Your time, attention, and replies have made a bigger impact than you probably realize. You've kept me writing, especially on the weeks when it felt hard.

And finally, I have an ask.

Over time, this work has become my vocation. I love helping people grow as leaders and build better organizations. What began as a simple newsletter has expanded into the Elevate Podcast, LinkedIn writing, courses, and speaking. It’s much more than I can manage alone.

In the past year, I’ve built a small team who helps with the editing, graphics and behind-the-scenes management required to let me focus on what I do best: writing and sharing ideas.

If you read Friday Forward from time to time and find it helpful, great—please continue enjoying the free version.

But if you never miss a post…if these messages have helped you make meaningful changes in your life or leadership…if you forward them regularly to your team, family or friends…I’d be deeply grateful if you’d consider becoming a paid subscriber to support this work.

Truly, it’s the price of a few lattes and cocktails.
