Happy Tuesday,

Want to know how you could dramatically change your culture this year by adding just $5,000 to your budget?

The secret is a wish granting program. I was skeptical of this concept when I first heard about it, but it's been one of the most impactful initiatives we have done at our company, and our program is now in its seventh year. Years from now, employees won’t remember a bonus you paid, but they will remember if you cared enough to help them achieve a personal goal, have a transformative experience or build stronger connections with their loved ones. A wish-granting program creates those moments for your team.

I wrote about the concept in detail in the latest edition of the Leadership Minute, my premium newsletter on Substack. If you aren’t yet a premium subscriber, you can unlock this post for free by clicking Claim My Free Post. Read the post.

My Next Book

Almost exactly five years ago, I gave a TEDx talk titled “It’s Time to End Two Weeks' Notice,” which recently topped 100,000 views. I also wrote a book on the topic—an in-depth exploration of the Open Transition Program we launched at AP to change the way employees leave companies. As I was shopping the book to publishers, COVID hit, and next thing I knew the book was shelved as I turned to other priorities.

After the past few years of the great resignation, quiet quitting and several prominent rounds of layoffs, the employee-employer dynamic has become more contentious than ever. We can all benefit from restoring trust and respect in the workplace, which is why I am dusting off the draft, updating it, and planning to release it for free this summer on Substack.

After a difficult few years, we all need more humanity in our workplaces. I’m excited to share a blueprint for improving how employees leave companies, which I hope will help restore that humanity.

On My Reading List

These are some of the books on my night table, including a couple from authors I’m excited to interview on the Elevate Podcast:

Slow Productivity by Cal Newport. Cal always has new ideas to offer for designing a more fulfilling life and career. His latest is an exploration of how to accomplish more in life without burning out. Cal will be making his third appearance on Elevate to discuss the book next month.
Good Inside by Dr. Becky Kennedy. One of my ongoing interests is the damage that helicopter parenting is doing to a generation of kids. Dr. Becky shares an antidote: a detailed parenting approach for how to raise kids to be confident, resilient and ready for the real world.
Quit by Annie Duke. My recent Friday Forward on knowing when to cut your losses was inspired in part by this book by ace poker player turned author Annie Duke. It’s a great analysis of risk, planning, and how to rationally assess when to walk away from things that aren’t serving you.
Remarkable Thinking by Guy Kawasaki. Guy has worked with some of the world’s most remarkable thinkers—most notably Steve Jobs—and he excels at distilling the lessons from these leaders into an accessible, actionable framework. Guy was one of my favorite recent Elevate guests, and this book is a must read for anyone looking to level up their thinking.
As always, be sure to subscribe to the Elevate Podcast to catch these conversations.
